Tax Exemptions

There are 4 different ways to Tax Exempt items in a Sale,

  • Attache a Tax Exempt Customer,
  • Use Tax Exempt Price level
  • Sell Tax Exempt Items by quantity
  • Use the Tax Shift Key functions.

 Tax Exemptions by Customer

The entire sale can be attached to a Tax Exempt customer, at any time during the sale.
All the items in the sale will adopt the Tax Exemption Status of the specified customer.

  • To setup a tax exempt customer, uncheck the appropriate boxes in the Back Office Customers - Customer Maintenance - Status Tab Option.
  • If a box is NOT checked then that Customer will NOT be charged for that Tax.

  • Then all you have to do is add that customer to the sale.
  • The items will then be taxed according to that customer’s exemption status.
  • The customer can pay by any means, if the customer is also set up as an account customer the amount can also be charged to their account.

Tax Exemptions by Item Sales Quantity

  • Items in the same department can also be automatically exempted by quantity sold after a certain break point has been reached.
  • If an item is Tax Exempted after a certain amount have been sold, then the program will watch for those items and create the Tax exemptions automatically.
  • Any items can be Tax exempted from within any sale, providing the cashier's permissions are sufficient to allow the operation.

To setup an item to deduct tax after a certain quantity have been sold, find the item in the Inventory - Item Maintenance section.

  • The Item must carry a Tax Level to start with

  • Click on the POS Options button under the Item Tab in the Item Maintenance form.
  • Click on the POS Pricing Setup button on the next screen to get to the eStream POS options entry form.

  • In the above example, sales of up to 5 Donuts will be taxed.
  • When the 6th Donut is sold, all of the Tax1 (Cdn GST/HST) amount on the first 5 sold will be removed and the rest of the Donuts in the sale (6 or more) will sell as tax exempt.
  • Similar items can be mixed and matched within the sale.

Tax Exempt an Item or entire Sale

  • If specific tracking by Customer is not required, the entire sale can be Tax Exempted using the Tax Shift key function.
  • Touch the item on the Cashier Receipt display.
  • Touch the 'Tax Shift' button on the sales screen.

This displays the Tax Exemptions screen.

  • If just one item is to be Tax Exempted, select that item on the Receipt list before touching the Tax Shift Key.
  • Touch the appropriate button requires to remove the Tax from the item or entire sale.

Touching any of the 'Exempt Sale' buttons will remove the specified tax from the entire sale.

  • This is a one way street! - if you wish to add taxes back then you will have to do each item individually.
  • If the Tax is not exampt, but for some reason a different rate applies for this sale, the Tax Rate can be calcualted using the calculator on the screen.

Entering a Customer Reference

  • Optionally, the lane can prompt the cashier to enter a reference for the exemption, for later audit purposes if required.
  • The Lane Option has to be set on each individual Lane for this to work.
  • Choose Cashout - Configure Lane -Lane Options to see the setup screen shown

  • If the option is set to 'N' then the Lane will not show the ID Verify screen
  • The program does no checking - it will take any reference characters entered.

  • Touch the 'ID Verified OK' button to continue with the reference entered.
  • Touch the required Tax Shift' functions on the next screen.
  • You will then be returned to the sale and the Taxes specied will be removed from the Sale Total. 

Additional Taxes can also be applied using the Shift Keys.

  • The Check ID screen does not come up again once it is filled in for any one sale.

Tax Exemptions by Price Level

Tax Exemptions to a Sale can also be made by attaching a Price Level with the appropriate Tax flags selected ON.

  • Individual Price Levels can also be attributed a Tax Exempt Status in the Back Office - Setup - POS Lanes - Price Levels Schedule form.
  • The Entire sale can be exempted by applying a Tax Exempt Price Level.

  • No cashier intervention or Tax Exemption Code entry is shown when this option is selected.
  • Items will just be automatically tax exempt whenever sold on that level.
